So… Have you started yet?
January 3, 2008 1:30 pm BlogWell, 2008 is upon us and it’s time to get going! Of course this is a bit hypocritical as I haven’t actually started myself yet, but tonight’s the night! I’ll be starting with “Stranger in a Strange Land“.
What has everyone else decided to start with?

I’ve already got off to a good start with Brave New World (i believe pg 156). In fact I’m almost finished with it. However, the version I purchased also has Brave New World Revisited (published in 1952, IIRC) which I may go ahead and read as well before starting Stranger in a Strange Land. It’s incredibly interesting in that (without giving away to much of the plot) it really gets your mind thinking about manufacturing a ‘perfect’ world which leaves people essentially dead inside without them knowing it. In this world, ‘family’ has become a grotesque thing and the word ‘mother’ is something that causes people to blush as it’s so gross. People are taught from a very early age that ‘everyone belongs to everyone’. In that sense, you don’t have one sexual partner. A person who would have one partner is viewed by others as we (present day humans) would look at someone who was excessively promiscuous. In this world God / religion and families are non-existent. It’s been very good so far!

I think that sounds like a good one to start with… it’s the only one I have bought so far.
